starter motor charging problem? zx6r j1

Post by aljaxon » Fri Oct 19, 2018 10:05 pm

after a 15-20 minute ride if I switch off and then try to start the bike its as if the battery is half flat and the starter motor struggles to turn over at approx. 1/2 - 3/4 speed
if I ride home and park up and leave till cold or even the next day the battery is full of charge and starter motor turns over normal speed.

ive performed all the checks as per kawasaki service manual and they all read ok
ive tried 3 batteries and 3 regulators and switched the windings to the alternator but still get same problem

ive strapped a multimeter to my tank to check volotage whilst riding and it doesn't start to over charge but behaves as per manual

so im thinking its something wrong with the starter motor or the solenoid?

bike electrics bamboozle me btw.

so can anyone suggest how to test the starter motor? a pal texted checking its cranking cold power??? and then again when warm but I didn't understand and his explanation was unhelpful as his texting is worse than gibberish.

so any help please?

I have a spare starter motor

Switch the fuel tap to off half mile from home and then wait and try again. If that helps it’s fuel leaking into the cylinders.
Just got yourself a ZX-9R, then do yourself and your bike a favour, read this thread the sticky post in General Technical viewtopic.php?f=21&t=28097

Please will forum members put their bike model letter, & 1 or 2 after their Profile Location. eg: Your Town & B1,2,3,4 C1,2 E1,2 F1,2
As all zx9's are all slightly different, and I get fed up having to ask which model & number, as a year may not be accurate.

You can remove it and strip it to check the brushes, and clean the commutator. Pictures in the how to section somewhere. http://www.ZX-9R.Net/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=59195

sorted it
my pal tested voltage at motor at battery and at solenoid when cold and then after a run

the final proof was whilst cranking over very sluggishly a quick whack with a spanner brought it up to speed again. \:D/

gonna strip it and refurb but luckily i have a spare engine with one I can borrow it off.

im an idiot because ive gone through 3 batteries 2 rectifier/regulater? swaps and another alternator winding thingy over the last 6 or 7 years
